2017 News

18th December

Club History: ' By The Mulcaire Banks' was published in 1986 and records the first 100 years of the GAA in the parish. It is currently being updated, which hopefully will include a "Memories" section to enable members recall and record events and activities which stand out for them. These may be highlights, disappointments, funny incidents or extraordinary feats. They might take only one or two sentences or they may merit a more extensive description. We hope that as many members as possible will recall some memory worth recording. Please contact Denis Floyd with your memories.

Season’s Greetings: The club wishes to thank all our members, supporters and sponsors for all for the commitment and support given during 2017 and look forward to new development and progress on the field in 2018.

We hope that Santa is good to all the boys and girls as they have been very good all year. Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise daoibh.

Scór na nÓg: Well done to the Newport Instrumental Music Group who won the Scór na nÓg North Final in Borrisoleigh recently. They gave a great performance in the County Final last Sunday, but were unlucky to lose out to a very strong Killea Group. The members of the Group were Roisin Ryan, Kevin O'Brien, Stephen Mc Cormack, Eve Berry and Damian O'Brien

Development: We were delighted to have made a successful application for the Sports Capital programme and will receive a grant of €38,500 for development at Lacken Park. Thank you to local clubs and schools who have use of our facilities, supporting our application. We would like to thank Michael Lowry T.D. who initially visited us, advised and supported our application and more recently Senator Kieran O'Donnell who came to meet us and gave his support to our application. We were very grateful for their firm commitment to our application. This funding will help in the next phase of development at Lacken Park and with the support of the community, we will have more facilities to share with all.

Under 9: We travelled to Dublin last Sunday to participate in the Kilmacud tournament. Our Blues team played James Stephens, Dunboyne and Kilmacud in the group matches and got through to a final where they lost out against a very good Roanmore team. The Red team also got to their final after playing Athenry, Naas and Kilmacud. In the final against James Stephens they lost out by just one point in a match that could have gone either way. All the players did Tulach Sheasta proud and the future is bright for this team. Big thanks to all the support we got today. The Kilmacud people definitely knew the Newport supporters are a passionate bunch. Two squads were as follows:
Blue team - Aaron Lane, Benji Morgan, Cathal Ryan, Cillian Healy, Darragh McNamara, Fionn Deegan, Harry McKeogh, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Lucas Wright, Stephen O'Brien, Jack Powell

Red Team:  Aoibheann Collins, Cathal McNamara, Charlie Tobin, Conor McLoughlin, Cormac Shanahan, Eric Bates, Harry Noone, Luke McIntyre, Micheal Shanahan, Ollie Roche, Ryan O'Donnell & Conor Ryan.

Our lads hurled very well in all 3 games and as usual this year showed a great standard and great heart and determination. We have had a great year with these boys, and hope to see them all on the hurling wall over the winter. Well done to the lads, and thanks again to all the parents for their support over the year. Tulach Sheasta abú.  Panel in Thurles was Aaron O'Flaherty, Brian McCabe, Cillian Collins, Conor Sweeney, Dara McGrath, Eamon Walsh, Harry Lee, Liam Coffey, Luke Fitzgerald, Ryan Shinnors, Sam Caplis, Thomas Ryan and Zack Mooney.

Under 8’S: The U8's hurling and football season finished last Thursday evening, with a match V the coaches and the 8’s enjoyed a very exciting win. Last Sunday we welcomed the current All Ireland Senior Hurling Club champions Cuala to Lacken Park for a hurling & football blitz. All our players put in fantastic performances, putting all the skills they learned during the year to good use on the field of play.
Thank you to the parents and the players for their support and participation during a great year.
Mile Buiochas to manager Alfie O’ Brien and coaches Richie Ryan, Declan Carrig, Ger Gaffney, Ger O’ Donohoe, Thomas Ryan, Paraic Kennedy & John Berkery for giving of their time and energy all year.

Under 9s: We had a busy weekend playing Parteen in Lacken Park last Saturday morning and Cuala on Sunday morning in Lacken Park. Next Sunday we are off to Dublin to play in the Kilmacud tournament, which will involve teams from all over the country.

James O'Rourke Tournament: The annual James O'Rourke memorial Gaelic Football tournament was held in Lacken Park recently. On a wet and blustery day, a fine feast of football was served up by the participating teams.  The tournament consisted of an U-12 Cup and an U-11 Shield.  In the U-12 cup, there were four teams with Moyle Rovers, Monaleen, Ballina and Newport taking part. Despite the very blustery conditions a very competitive round robin series took place with Moyle Rovers and Monaleen qualifying for the final. Despite the conditions a competitive final took place with Moyle Rovers emerging as winners. In the U-11 Shield Ballinahinch, Sean Treacy’s and two Newport teams took part.  All teams played each other in the round robin stage of the tournament with both Newport teams coming out on top which resulted in the shield going to Newport.  Well done to all the teams for taking part in the tournament which again was a great success. Many thanks to all those who helped on the day and to the O'Rourke family for being present to present the trophies.

Under 21: Best of luck to the players and their mentors in the North championship as they play Ballinahinch/Templederry in Dolla this Sunday at 12 noon.
