Under 16
Our U16 hurlers participated in an epic battle with Nenagh in the semi final of
the U16A championship last week. It began on Mon last in Dolla when both teams
contributed to a dramatic draw after normal time and with light fading fast, the
game went to extra time. The extra period failed to separate the teams and both
went home relieved that they had another opportunity to progress. Then on
Saturday last we travelled to Templederry for a high noon throw in for
the replay. Newport began well, then conceded two soft goals to allow
Nenagh back. Two points separated the teams at half time but when the second
half recommenced, Nenagh scored six points without reply. To their credit,
Newport never faltered and battled to the end scoring a great goal from a 65 dropping
ball. Final score Newport 4-14 Nenagh 2-19, a one point win for Newport. This
all means that we have deservedly qualified for the North Final against
Kilruane next weekend. Kilruane will be hot favourites having beaten us well
earlier this year, but Newport have had a much more challenging route to the
final having played all their pool games and the drawn semi final which might
work in our favour. The final is on this weekend, date & venue TBC.
Intermediate
Newport Intermediates rounded off a fantastic day for the club with a thrilling
one point win over Arravale Rovers also on Saturday in the County Quarter
final. This means we have now qualified for the County semi against Moyne-Templetouhy at The Ragg on Sunday at 12 noon.
A night at the dogs
We have organised a fundraising cum social night for Friday November 1st at
Limerick Greyhound Stadium in the guise of a night at the dogs. This should be
a great night for all the family and admission tickets are available from any
committee member. We are also selling "Nominators" whereby for €50
you can buy a dog for the night. Should your dog win the race you will then
enter in a grand draw for €200 and dinner for two.
