Sympathies: Tulach Sheasta GAA Club extends its sincerest sympathy to the family of the late John Ryan (Cregaun) of Madaboy, Murroe and formerly of Ashroe, Newport. John was a very prominent under-age player with Newport, winning a North Under 12 'B' Hurling title in 1978 and a county Under 16 'A' Football crown in 1982, before moving to Murroe.

The 'Cregauns' had a rich hurling history in both Tipperary and Limerick. John's father, Pat, and his uncle Mick helped bring the first championship to Newport (Junior Hurling 1924) and they went on to win a North Tipp Senior Hurling title in 1932. Mick also won a Junior All Ireland with Tipperary in 1926 and lined out with the county in a number of league games. Having transferred to Murroe they soon rose to prominence with Limerick, Mick winning two All Ireland senior titles and three National Leagues, while Pat collected two League medals.

Seniors:  Newport made it 3 wins out of 5 when they defeated Ballina in Round 5 of the County Senior Hurling League at Lacken Park on Sunday.  The home side controlled the first half of a well-contested game, although Ballina will not be happy at the number of wides they recorded. Newport had a commanding 0-9 to 0-4 lead after 25 minutes, but their opponents had reduced the deficit  to 3 by the interval. The Shannonsiders started the second half in determined fashion and within 7 minutes had raced into a 1 point lead. Newport regained their composure and with Dara Carroll accurate from placed balls (he scored 5 to add to his 2 from play) and Colin Floyd (0-5) in good scoring form, they re-asserted their authority. Scoring was tit-for-tat for the next ten minutes, but the decisive score came in the 22nd minute when Eoin Shinners raced on to a breaking ball to finish to the net. Cian Flanagan, who was a second half replacement, completed the scoring as the game drew to a close. Conor O’Mahony was soundness personified in the defence where Ben Wixted also made a promising debut. Mike McKeogh put in a solid hour’s work at midfield.
Final Score: Newport 1-16 Ballina 0-14.

Seniors:  A very much understrength senior hurling team lost out to JK Brackens in their county league game last Sunday on a scoreline of Newport 2-08 to JK Brackens 1-20.  They made an impressive opening with a Pa Ryan goal after three minutes but this early warning  from the Newport full forward was soon curtailed as JK Brackens applied an extra man in front of him to limit the threat. Newport suffered a killer blow in the 25th minute as their goalkeeper Paul Hogan was judged to have stepped over his line to concede an unfortunate goal which extended the Brackens lead to four points. Three more points gave them a half time lead of 1-13 to 1-5. In the second half Brackens ace forward Lyndon Fairbrother continued to punish Newport's careless tackling, as he ended up with a personal tally of 14 points of which eleven were from frees. Newport continued to press hard and a late goal by Kealan Floyd put respectability on the scoreboard as JK Brackens ran out deserving winners.

Juniors: The Junior Hurlers match v Kilruane MacDonaghs due to be played last weekend was postponed as a mark of respect to the late Michael Cahill (RIP) of Kilruane.

Minors: The minor hurlers put in a great performance in a high scoring game v Silvermines last Wednesday evening but unfortunately lost out on a final scoreline of 5-14 to 4-13. They have a home game v Moneygall this Wednesday evening May 8th @ 7:00 PM.

Under 16’s The under 16 footballers had a good win in their North Football Semi Final v  Ballinahinch / Templederry in Lacken Park  last Monday evening on a scoreline of Newport 2-5 to Ballinahinch / Templederrys 0-04. Under 14 Football: Our Under 14 Group A team lost their final group match away to Ballina last Thursday evening on a scoreline of Newport 3-06 to Ballina’s 1-15. They have now qualified for the North Semi Final which is an away game v Nenagh this Thursday evening May 9th @ 7:00 PM.

Under 12’s: The Under 12 Group C team had a good win in their North Semi Final V Nenagh on a scoreline of 5-05 to 2-05. Their North Final v Borrisokane was played on Bank Holiday Monday, when the young side lost out by 2-4 to 0-4.   The Under 12 Group D team put in a great performance in their semi-final v Ballina but missed out by a single score after extra time on a scoreline of Newport 2-00 to Ballina 1-04.

Seniors: Hard luck to our senior’s hurlers who lost out narrowly to Lorrha in their county league game last Sunday in Lacken Park on a scoreline of Newport 2-17 to Lorrha 0-24. Their next game in the county league is away to JK Brackens this Sunday May 5th @ 12:00 noon. Dan Donoghue was the hero for Lorrha as he scored two late points to snatch victory from Newport in this exciting high scoring Co SH League game. There was nothing between the sides all through but two goals in the first half by Daragh Carroll and Daniel Carew gave Newport the edge to lead at half time by 2-11 to 0-12. Lorrha had the greater scoring power in the second half adding a further 12 points with Cian Hogan and Eoin McIntyre to the fore whilst Newport were dependent on the free taking of Eoin Shinnors to stay in the game. With the game in the melting pot in the closing stages a melee involving many players resulted in the dismissal of Shinnors and Lorrha's Ciaran Hough by referee Ger Fitzpatrick. Donoghue's brace of points in the final minutes gave Lorrha a two point lead as Odhran Floyd pulled it back to a single score with a free in added time. But time ran out for the home side, as Lorrha went home happy having secured both points from this exciting league game.
